According to Maori mythology most of Aotearoa was brought together when Maui, one of the powerful demigods, made a magical hook for fishing. This hook was made out of his grandmothers jawbone. That very day Maui went out to fish, he hopped in a little wooden boat and started to paddle. He went all the way into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In that very spot he caught a fish. This fish was the South Island of Aotearoa. In this honour the North Island is sometimes called Te Ika E Maui or Maui’s fish and the South Island is sometimes called Te Waka E Maui or Maui’s waka.
Kia ora Kiarah,
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to see that you have participated in the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. I love the picture that you have included with your post about Maui. Can I please ask you where you found it? Was it on a website?
I would love to know as I would like to use it for my work next year at the university. My job is to design the Summer Learning Journey programme and I am always looking for great pictures to include in the programme each year. This year our programme has 60 different activities related to the environment of New Zealand (and overseas). We really hope that you will have time to complete more of these activities over the summer. We'll be sure to pop back and check your blog again soon to see if you have had time to re-join the journey. We'd love to work with you this summer!
All the best,
Rachel (and the SLJ team)
