(Kick Start + Step it Up) Poetry Slam: Haiku and Tanka - SLJ 2021-2022

For the SLJ one of the poetry slam tasks was to write a Haiku or Tanka. I have decided to take the challenge and do both. A Haiku has 3 lines, the first line has 5, then 7 in the 2nd and then 5 syllables in the last. A Tanka has 5, then 7, then 5, then 7 and lastly 7. The Haiku will rhyme whereas the tanka will not. Enjoy :)

  1. Kia ora Kiarah. I'm Phil from the intro video to this task. Thanks for entering your awesome poems into the slam! I like the way you included your slides as well as a video of you reading your poems. You've also used some great descriptive words. I wonder if there are other one syllable words that also mean soft... I'll look forward to reading your future poems.

  2. Ata mārie Kiarah!

Chris here from the SLJ, again. This is fantastic. Not only are both of your poems correctly done, and really lovely, but the attached video of you performing them lets us know how you’d like them to sound. Ka pai!

Something about poetry is that it is so subjective (different to each person), and getting to hear the artist deliver their art gives us as an audience a better idea of the intended sound! Tēnā koe for that! Have you had the chance to listen to much poetry in real life?

There are some great words in here as well, namely “unique”, “crash”, and “charming.” Pai mahi Kiarah!

Can’t wait to see what you post next!

    Ngā mihi,
    Chris
