Find Your Fingerprint: A Nano-Girl Experiment - SLJ 2021-2022

Fingerprints are marks that are left by the grooves inside your fingers. All fingerprints are different! There are three types of finger prints, loops, whorls and arches. What are yours? Mine are whorls. Our job is to find and record our fingerprints. You could use tape or something sticky like play dough to find these marks. Get to work!

Are there any other different types of finger prints in your house hold?

Mum - Whorl

Dad - Loop

Brother - Whorl

What did you use to get your finger print?

I used a piece of tape and some pencil led. I scribbled the pencil up and down until there was a generous amount. Then I rubbed my finger in the led all over. After that I put the tape on top of my finger, the led transferred to the tape with my finger print on it. When you put it on paper you can see it clearly.

(Kick Start) Cicada Drum - SLJ 2021-2022

One of the tasks this week was to make a drum! I made mine out of paper, puffy paint and plastic. I wrapped the paper into a cylinder shape, with the top and bottom bare. Then I taped plastic on the top, I used a different material so it made a different sound. I then decorated with puffy paint, I did it with puffy paint so you could run your fingers across the patterns. This would cause it to make a unique sound. Have a Merry Christmas! Enjoy :)

Merry Christmas Eve! - 5 things I'm grateful for

WOW! It is Christmas Eve, has this year flown by or what? There has been many things to look forward to, throughout the year. Other things have been a bit sad, but what can you do? It is good to think about things you are grateful for, in years and times like this. I am going to list 5 things that helped me have a better year, recently and in the past (of 2021).

1. My Family have been big supporters and I definitely wouldn't be where I am today without there love and hard-work.

2. Teachers/School have been a way for me to have another life apart from my home life. It helped me find a way to engage in things I couldn't at home. Things like sports, extra classes and so much more. School has been a blessing!

3. On the topic of school, my friends. Even though we don't get along sometimes, I want to say a huge thanks. Not only did they help me get through the hard times, but they knew when I needed a laugh, cry, smile and all emotions you can think of. THANK-YOU!

4. Sport was fun, and I was lucky to participate in quite a bit this year. It not only helped me physically, but also mentally. It helped me communicate with my team and let out all my emotions in a mannerly way. Thank-you to my coaches and managers.

5. This one is recent, but the SLJ! Summer has been very different, we can't go anywhere and I get very bored. With the SLJ it helped me find fun tasks to do, but explore different subjects and have fun doing it. Thank-you to the SLJ team!

So where ever you are have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay safe and positive, only one more sleep!

(Bridge Builder) Fundamental Forces: Compression - SLJ 2021-2022

I am here to explain MY understanding of Tension and Compression. I recently did a task about making my own bridge, I talked about compression. I got comments asking what this word meant, so here I am. I hope this helps.

EXPLANATION:

A load on a beam bridge places the top under COMPRESSION and the bottom on TENSION. We use strong materials like concrete and steel. COMPRESSION basically means something being squished down.If an elephant was on top of a bridge, the bridge would be compressed/squished by the animal.  TENSION basically means something being stretched. If you were to stretch a rubber band, it would eventually break because of TENSION.

(Kick Start) Bridge Builder: Draft Template - SLJ 2021-2022

Today the first SLJ tasks was to make a bridge. I decided to go with this design, after making my design I looked where the compression points were. I might make this in real life, but it would be quite a challenge. Make sure to check out some more of my SLJ tasks over the summer. Enjoy :)

Something that will Float: A Nano-Girl experiment - SLJ 2021-2022

 A few Facts:

Things float because of something called buoyancy.  This describes how "floaty" or "Buoyant" something is. Wood floats really well because of air bubbles trapped inside the wood. Materials like rocks, which are just solid and have no air, this means it sinks. Things like this are called DENSE. If something is heavy like a boat, it has to have air in it, in order for it to float.

Task:

Make something that floats! It could be anything, just something lying around your house. Test your invention, by measuring how far it floats, and how much it can carry.

What would you change? : Sail (make the width smaller)

What did I notice? : It went around in small circles

Why did this happen? : I think this happened because the sail wasn't the right size

Something that will fly: A Nano-Girl experiment - SLJ 2021-2022

The First Challenge that started off the SLJ was a Nano Girl experiment. I unfortunately missed this, and only saw it today. So I decided to do it! For my flying thing I chose a paper ball. The reason why is because it is simple and easy to work with, if it broke I could make another. This was super fun and I asked and answered different types of questions. Can't wait for another one of these challenges! Make sure to check out the video below. Enjoy :)

 4 Forces:

Gravity is the force that pulls down.

Lift is the force used to get things up and to keep a plane up in the air, the air flows underneath the wings.

Thrust is the force of moving things forward such as a plane: engine moves it forward.

Drag is the force that slows things down, create a pointy end to reduce drag.

Paper Ball:

1 Piece of Paper ball - 11 of my own Feet (Size 10)

2 Piece of Paper ball - 9 of my own Feet (Size 10)

What did I notice? : I noticed that the smaller ball went further (same thrust for each ball).

Why did this happen? : I think this happened because of the weight difference.

What would I change? : I would make the ball more compressed, and add a bit more thrust into the throw.

(Kick it Off) Maths Magic Tricks - SLJ 2021-2022

Make sure to check out the step it up challenge, where I make my idol/hero. Enjoy :)

Usually at the end of every term we do a "Term Reflection". Well, it's now time for the YEAR reflection. That's right, the 2021 school year is officially over! This year was hectic, and there was a lot of very high highs, but very low lows. So I will be reflecting and sharing those with all of you today. Lets get started!

This year we had a really big event. Jacinda Ardern or the Prime Minister of NZ came to our school. Thanks to the year 4's and 3's, we got to have a conversation with our very own prime minister. LEVEL 3 LOCK-DOWN (BUBBLE SCHOOL TERM 1):

In term 1 we unfortunately had to go into lock-down. Although this wasn't ideal we had lot's of fun at bubble school. (I also went in term 3+4).

PICNIC:

In the start of the term we got to go on a school picnic! Like we do most years, it was a fun time and a beautiful day.

SOFTBALL:

This year I participated in 3 sports, 1 of them was softball. I went to 2 tournaments. Mixed (Yr 7 + 8, Boys and girls) and then just age group and gender. We played this sport at the start of the year, and I really enjoyed it!

NETBALL:

This sport was a BIG highlight of my year. It helped me improve with many skills and had a lot of good out comes for my mental and physical health. My main position was GA.

FIA FIA:

This year we had Fia Fia! I performed in the Tongan group.

TE KAPUA:

This year we have gotten a big shade over our small courts. We called this Te Kapua.

KPMG TRIP:

This year we went to KPMG! It was a super fun experience.

EXTENSION:

Extension was a big part of my life this year and had a big impact on how I saw the world. We did lot's of fun projects helping the community, having fun and doing much more. It was an amazing experience and I'm so lucky to be in the group next year!

PRIZE GIVING:

This year we actually got to have prize-giving! It was a bit different, but it was lot's of fun. I got a few prizes and had an awesome time dancing with everyone.
