(Kick Start) Sale Percentages: The Maths - SLJ 2021-2022

Since I forgot to do the maths to this blog-post I am doing another one, explaining how much you would buy it for. If you haven't seen the original you can check it out here: http://peskiarahs.blogspot.com/2022/01/kick-start-sale-percentages-slj-2021.html
Enjoy:)
If you have 10% off $50, you have $45 as the ending price. If you have 30% off when you buy 3, that's a bit more complicated. If we multiply 50 by 3 that would come to 150, 30% of 150=45. So 150-45=105.

Optical Illusions: A Nano-Girl Experiment - SLJ 2021-2022

Explanation of Optical Illusions (From Nano Girl):

Optical means to do with our eyes, and optical illusion is where our eyes see something that isn’t really there.

Cartoons are optical illusions. Traditional cartoons are made up from thousands of drawings that are shown so quickly that your brain thinks the drawings are moving.

What I will be doing:

Another way you can do this is using the science of refraction which is where light bounces differently through water than it does through air. If you draw an arrow on a piece of paper and then look at it through a glass of water, it seems to change direction but it’s just a trick on our eyes.

I have decided to draw an arrow, this is how it turned out:

I drew an arrow to the right and as you can see it has become an arrow to the left!

This is my arrow before hand.

I found out that if you put it close enough to the glass, the illusion does not work.

What next?:

An arrow was a practice, so now I decided to draw a stick figure!
My Stick Figure is holding an orange so you can see whether it switches sides or not:

This is how it turned out! It worked :)

(Kick Start) Build a Boat - SLJ 2021-2022

One of the tasks this week was to create a boat and see if it would float or sink. These are photo's of my boat, and if it floated or sank. Enjoy:)

Boat:

I used cardboard tubes for the base of my boat, paper and ice-block sticks for the sail, and then I decorated it.

Float or Sink?:
SINK!
My boat sank, the question is why?

I think my boat sank because the paper tubes had no air trapped inside, it was just a hole straight through. That meant that the water was able to get inside my boat.

What could I do better?:
I think I could of twisted my sail around, so the wind would push it to the side instead of into the water.

This was a super fun activity, I enjoyed experimenting with all of the different materials! Try it out.
